time

piece by piece we fall beside ourselves like leaves from a tree

every piece is so little that they fall so delicately

and it won't be long before we've collected beside ourselves, tiny piles of debris

i've never been so motionless except times when i was with you

and whether that's bad or good, i wish i knew

even through suffocating dust unsettled, i still couldn't move

time will burn my eyes blind.

sitting on the bleachers, fourth of july

under a blanket of red stripes and white stars, and fireworks in the sky.

red twilight draws me near

the lines of life's geography smear and disappear

and time burns my eyes blind

i have nowhere to be except right here and so naturally...

i fall in love again

you fall asleep

how can you lose track of time when you keep looking at your watch?

and you keep tapping on your wheel even after the music has stopped

when i'm looking to be somebody else,

i turn to you.

i turn into you

hanging out with a six-string or a four, covered in smoke

a little light-skinned girl making love to a piano

red twilight draws me near

the lines of life's geography smear and disappear

and time burns my eyes blind

i have nowhere to be except right here

and naturally,

i fall in love again

you fall asleep.
