poetry

poetry reads better over the hums
of my heart's soft synth and drums
you're not the only one there tonight
your timing just never seems to be right
so i write
poetry reads better over the peaceful tides
the notes and chords i hear you strum in my mind
i'm not the only one here tonight
to hear you play in the warmth of just one spotlight
so i write
whenever the world turns cold
i know you're far away
whenever you wait for me
these words we can never say
they sleep on this sheet

poetry reads better over your newfound innocence
and the silence
between
all the years we've had clean
poetry reads better over the noise
i've made when i didn't have a choice
you say, there's always a choice
i just don't make them right
so i write
poetry reads better under the shadow of someone else
the beauty of summers past
and the day those two towers fell
whenever the world turns cold
i know you're far away
whenever you wait for me
these words i can never say
they sleep on this sheet

they sleep on this sheet
